Animals can be...
VERTEBRATES
They have a backbone
OR
INVERTEBRATES
They don't have a backbone
REPRODUCTION. Depending on the way they reproduce, animals can be…
VIVIPAROUS
They are born from their mother’s womb.
OVIPAROUS
OR
They are born from eggs.
NUTRITION. Depending on the food they eat, animals can be…
CARNIVORES

They eat plants
They eat both, plants and other animals
VERTEBRATES

They have a backbone and a skeleton
Most vertebrates have: a head, torso, limbs and a tail.
We can classify vertebrates into five groups:
Mammals
For example: a cat is a vertebrate.
Birds
For example: a rooster is a vertebrate.
Reptiles
For example: a snake is a vertebrate.
Fish
For example: a shark is a vertebrate.
Amphibians
For example: a frog is a vertebrate.
What is a mammal?
-
All mammals are vertebrates because they have a backbone.
-
They are viviparous because they born from their mother’s womb, and they feed their babies with milk.
-
All mammals breathe with their lungs.
-
Mammals can be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. Their teeth depend on that.
-
Most of them have fur or hair, and four legs.
-
Most mammals live on land (lion), some live in water (dolphin) and only one can fly (bat).
What is a bird?

-
Birds are vertebrates because they have a backbone.
-
They are oviparous because they are born from eggs.
-
Their skin is covered with feathers.
-
Most birds can fly, but some birds cannot fly such as the penguin and ostrich.
-
They have two wings, a beak and two legs.
What is a reptile?

-
Reptiles are vertebrates because they have a backbone.
-
They are oviparous because they are born from eggs.
-
They live on land.
-
Some reptiles have four legs and crawl (lizards) , others have no legs and slither (snakes) , and finally others have flippers and swim (turtle).
-
The skin of reptiles is covered with scales.
Turtles also have a hard shell.

What is a fish?

-
Fish are vertebrates because they have a backbone.
-
They are oviparous because they are born from eggs.
-
They live in water. They swim using their fins and tail.
They breathe with gills.
-
Some fish live in salt water (seas and oceans).
Other fish live in fresh water (rivers and lakes).
-
Their skin is covered with scales .
What is an Amphibian?

-
Amphibians are vertebrates because they have a backbone.
-
They are oviparous because they are born from eggs.
-
Baby amphibians are called tadpoles Tadpoles live in water. They don't have legs, but they have a tail to swim.
